Carilion Clinic wants you to help bring cheer to hospitalized kids over the holiday

ROANOKE, VA. (WFXR) – Roanoke’s Carilion Clinic is asking for the community’s help in making sure children and teens under their care have something to celebrate over the holidays through its “Bring Cheer to Children Hospitalized During the Holidays.”

Anytime someone is in the hospital, it can be stressful, especially for children. To help, Carilion Clinic is asking for gifts for two different units helping kids in our region: The Children’s Hospital and the Mental Health Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry unit.

“[It’s] more intensive monitoring and treatment for a mental health condition,” said Lisa Dishner, the senior director for mental health. “So that might be things such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, that would need some medication changes, suicidal thoughts. We also see some substance use disorders in our in our adolescent population that require some inpatient treatment.”

That unit is one of the largest in the region. It sees around 500 children and teens, aged nine to 17, each year. They also see kids from all over the state, sometimes making it difficult for families to visit, so these gifts from the community can make a difference…
