Holiday travel unaffected by Roanoke airport runway closure

ROANOKE, VA. (WFXR) – Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport’s one of two runways, 16-34, is closed for repairs.

Crews have been working on the project since September. The work focuses on the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), which was damaged when a United Express flight overshot the runway three months ago.“The vendor is on site right now. There’s only one vendor in the country repairing the emas,” said Alexa Briehl, pr, marketing, and media manager.

Briehl says about 10 to 15 percent of the EMAS blocks, roughly 400 pieces, are being rebuilt specifically for Roanoke’s runway…
