City of Roanoke awarded six-figure grant to explore Amtrak area

ROANOKE, VA. (WFXR) – A $770,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation allows the city of Roanoke to study an area within a five-point radius of the current Amtrak platform.

“If you look, if you think about a 0.5-mile radius to the Amtrak platform you’ve got immediately downtown, you’ve got some of the historic neighborhoods, the Gainsborough neighborhood, you’ve got the hotel Roanoke,” said Joe Cobb, the Mayor of Roanoke.

City leaders say the funding builds on long-term plans already in motion, including the city’s purchase of property next to the platform…
