BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – Researchers at Virginia Tech are helping spearhead research into dams across the nation, preliminary results revealing some of the largest dams across the country are deforming.
Dr. Manoochehr Shirzaei with VT’s Department of Geosciences and Dr. Mohammad Khorrami used satellites to collect data, measuring changes of land surface around hydropowered dams.
“By collecting this measurement over a period of time, we can create a very precise and accurate map of the surface deformation at very high resolution, few meter resolution in space, and millimeter level precision,” said Dr. Shirzaei…
