Roanoke County man sentenced to 165 months in prison for role in robbery, fatal shooting

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — A Roanoke County man was sentenced to 165 months in federal prison on January 12 for his role in a drug robbery and shooting in 2019.

29-year-old Damon Tyler Mills pleaded guilty in April 2025 to one count of Hobbs Act robbery and one count of brandishing and possessing a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia said Mills robbed his one-time roommate for drugs and drug proceeds before later shooting and killing someone who attempted to rob him.

Authorities responded to an apartment in Roanoke County on February 24, 2019, regarding a disturbance involving firearms. Arriving officers found a victim dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to their head and chest, according to court documents. Mills was determined to be the shooter in that situation.
