Grown Here at Home: Roanoke County farm uses winter cattle care strategies

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7)— Recent winter storms left snow and ice across C&F Farms, but owner Jared Frye has developed strategies to keep the cattle comfortable during harsh weather.

“When it’s extremely cold, equipment doesn’t want to start. It makes it harder to get to the animals and move around as freely as you might normally do. So, we stage a lot of our hay ahead of time,” Frye said.

The cattle navigate snowy conditions by creating trails through the snow and ice. When hay is rolled out, it provides additional footing and bedding areas for the animals to move around easily…
