Hometown Health: Expert says ‘mom brain’ can be a superpower during postpartum period

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Becoming a parent means more responsibility and less sleep. It can take time for the brain to adjust.

“Mom brain has gotten a bad rap over the years,” said Dr. Tamar Gur, a psychiatrist with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Gur said “mom brain” can happen during the major transition of becoming a parent, when new challenges include time management, mental fog, reduced focus, forgetfulness and staying socially connected — all while functioning through severe sleep deprivation and hormonal shifts.
