Roanoke considers change in use of federal housing funds

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – The city of Roanoke is considering changing how it uses federal housing dollars as it looks to complete projects in one neighborhood and start them in another.

Roanoke receives Emergency Shelter Grants and Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development each year. The city will get around $2.5 million from these grants this year, consistent with the last few years. The city also receives HOME funds as part of the overall HUD funding.

Every five years, the city creates a new plan for the use of HUD funds, but reviews and evaluates that plan on an annual basis…
