New channel markers and the low water levels highlighted the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) Water Safety Council meeting on May 6. The new lateral navigation signs and markers have been installed by Appalachian Power Company (APCo). According to APCo Senior Plant Support Specialist Mark McGlothin, some existing marks will be moved based on the low water levels in different areas.
Boaters are reminded to stay in the marked channels. They are advised to look for exposed shoals and rocks in areas that are usuallycovered by water during the normal water levels. Boaters should also pay close attention to the new lights while cruising at night. Sunset boating is popular in warm weather during late spring and summer.
