ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man was arrested and charged after investigators said he bought stolen customer account data from an illicit online marketplace.
Prosecutors said Brandon Hall, 23, bought 12 packages on Genesis Market between November 2019 and February 2021 containing a total of about 1,100 account credentials stolen from computers infected with malware.
Genesis Market collects stolen email addresses, usernames, passwords, and device identifiers using malware and makes it available for sale in exchange for digital currencies. The FBI has been investigating the marketplace since 2018, prosecutors said.
Investigators searched Hall’s cell phone in May, 2023. It allegedly showed Hall was active on Genesis Market, buying stolen data from Citi Bank, AT&T, Venmo, Twitter, Netflix, LinkedIn, Spotify, Hulu, Google, Paypal, Microsoft, Yahoo, Walmart, Target, and Amazon accounts.
Hall was charged with possessing 15 or more unauthorized access devices. He is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday.
