Dr. Michael Mendoza steps down as Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Dr. Michael Mendoza announced he has stepped down from his position as Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health.

According to Monroe County, they are searching for Dr. Mendoza’s replacement. Deputy Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Mareilena Velez de Brown will serve as acting commissioner.

“I wish the best for all the dedicated staff in the Department of Public Health and I am certain that the department will continue to be successful,” said Dr. Mendoza.

Dr. Mendoza has served as the county’s commissioner of public health since 2016, he was recently reappointed to the position in August 2022 . The county has highlighted his leadership skills, his work towards ending the opioid epidemic, and his effort during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before working with the Monroe County Department of Health, Dr. Mendoza served as medical director for Highland Family Medicine as a primary care physician and served as a teaching physician at Highland Hospital. He will focus on future opportunities towards public health.
