Avon police chief suspended without pay

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — At an emergency board meeting in the Village of Avon Wednesday night the village mayor announced that Avon Police Chief Joseph Geer has been suspended without pay, according to an Avon town councilman who attended the meeting.

This suspension follows news last month that the New York State Comptroller’s Office was looking into a bookkeeping and scheduling issue related to Village of Avon police department.

Village Mayor Thomas Freeman confirmed in February for News 8 it’s Geer who handles scheduling.

At the same time the comptroller was investigating the police chief, the Avon Central School district said the FBI was investigating whether a district service provider submitted false claims for work performed for the district. Geer is also a school resource officer, yet the district last month did not confirm he was the center of the investigation.

Avon Town Councilman James Harrington attended the village board meeting Wednesday night.

He says the board went into executive session at 5:00 p.m. then came out at 7:00 p.m. to announce the suspension.
