Longtime diner reopens in the South Wedge in Rochester

In the restaurant world, “closed for remodeling” is often a euphemism for “goodbye forever.” That’s why some wondered if a longtime diner in the South Wedge had served its last dinner plate-sized pancake when it was shuttered for awhile.

As it turns out, the 31-year-old Pat’s Coffee Mug was closed for 11 weeks to get some much needed renovations; it reopened Monday.

While it looks the same on the outside, the interior has been spruced up with a new kitchen and new floors. Tables and chairs have replaced the previous booths, but you can also grab a stool at the counter. (Chances are, the folks a the counter will be chatty.)

Its homey, welcoming character hasn’t changed. Vintage metal signs with funny, sassy sayings still adorn the walls. Owner Pat Hall still cooks in the kitchen, while her daughter, Debbie Thomas holds down the front of house.

On the menu, you’ll find homey, straightforward breakfast and lunch fare: eggs, pancakes and French toast for breakfast, burgers and sandwiches for lunch.
