Former RCSD student who accused teacher of abuse to get $2.5 million

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A woman who accused a well-known former Rochester chorus teacher of sexually abusing her decades ago will receive $2.5 million as part of a settlement with the Rochester City School District.

According to the woman’s attorney, John Bansbach, she is one of nine who sued RCSD and its former music teacher, Edwin Fleming, “for sexual abuse between 1968 and 1981 inside West or East high schools while they were RCSD students under 18 years of age.”

The plaintiff in this recently settled suit was referred to in the courts as BL Doe 1.

Earlier this month, RCSD’s Board of Education approved the payment of $1.6 million for BL Doe 1, with the rest coming from the district’s insurance company.

“It has been six calendar years since BL Doe 1’s lawsuit was begun. She is pleased to have the lawsuit behind her,” Bansbach said.

This most recent settlement follows News 8’s past reporting of another case involving a different former student and litigant who talked exclusively to News 8 about her experience with Fleming.
