Canandaigua community commemorates Patriot Day

CANANDAIGUA — This day was like any other that marked a day many hope will never be forgotten.

First responders began their march from Gorham Street to their destination, American Legion Post 256 in Canandaigua, for a Patriot Day ceremony on Sept. 11.

The ceremony commemorated the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and recognized the heroism and bravery of the first responders, some of whom also lost their lives that day and in later years as a result of their rescue efforts, then and now. Here, in Canandaigua and other areas of the Finger Lakes and there, New York City, Washington, D.C., and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A wreath was placed at the Legion Post’s 9/11 memorial, a spot along its Trail of Remembrance, which serves as a memorial to the “fallen heroes” in all of the country’s wars, a source of pride in the military and a place of learning.
