Brain Injury Association of NYS honors URMC, local survivor

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Saturday advocates, community members and brain injury survivors gathered together in Rochester to honor survivors, and the work being done at URMC – which recently helped to garner statewide recognition of its services.

According to the Brain Injury Association of New York State, URMC is the first organization to be recognized as its Statewide Program Honoree. Saturday during the “March On for Brain Injury Walk” at Seneca Park, organizers emphasized the importance of the services URMC provides.

“As western New York’s largest and the Rochester region’s only Level 1 trauma facility, Strong Memorial Hospital at URMC is a destination for patients from across upstate NY who require advanced levels of trauma care,” Susan Bardack with BIANYS explained in a release.

Also honored Saturday: a local couple that worked through a life-threatening injury together. According to BIANYS, Eric O’Brien suffered numerous concussions that went untreated. Later down the line while recovering from brain surgery for a cyst, officials said he nearly died. His wife, Maureen (Mo), worked with him patiently according to officials, and remained by his side the entire time.
