‘First Day Hike’ at Genesee Valley Greenway State Park celebrates return of the ‘fisher’

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Early Wednesday morning folks gathered to celebrate the New Year by getting outside and enjoying the weather during a “First Day Hike” at the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park, joining parks across the state.

“One of the amazing things is, everyone needs nature, and nature needs everyone to enjoy it. We all benefit from being outside and the stress relief we get hearing birds and seeing trees and spending time outside. Even just a couple of minutes can make us feel better,” said Elliotte Bowerman, director of communications for the Genesee Land Trust.

Those young and old joined Genesee Land Trust for their annual “First Day Hike” with a special hot cocoa toast. The primary reason for celebration, of course, is the New Year. But many people said they were there to celebrate the return of the fisher, a forest-dwelling mammal and key member of the ecosystem.
