What are some rock salt alternatives you can use?

ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) – With the New York State salt shortage going on, what else can you use to get rid of the ice, or to get your car going if you get stuck?

Water softeners are a good rock salt alternative. Pellets are made to soften water in drainage pipes to prevent buildup. But they can also be used to soften ice on your driveways and sidewalks. Water softeners are also pet-friendly, so you don’t have to worry about your pets eating them.

New York State has a rock salt shortage

Roof melt pretty much does the same thing for outside ice. The main use for it is to help prevent ice dams so water can flow along your gutter. You can also use your own calcium chloride. Calcium Chloride is an ingredient in ice melts. You can mix the calcium chloride with sand to get better traction as well.

Sand is a good thing to keep with you. Place some sand in front of your tires and you should be able to get enough traction to get going. Kitty litter helps with the same thing. Just remember, sand or kitty litter don’t go away when the ice or snow melts.
