HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WROC) — Meredith Davenport has been a photojournalist covering social justice issues for over 35 years. She recently received a $25,000 grant from The Aftermath Project for her work that explores her ancestral ties to slavery.
Davenport’s ancestors owned a cotton plantation in Louisiana, and for decades she’s been exploring her familial ties to slavery, with works including a collection of historical research, photography, poetry, and fine art.
“These photos are made kind of in the process of doing the research,” Davenport said. “I’m interested in stories as vehicles to think about how we think about race, not necessarily of the escapades of my ancestors.”…
