ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Community members rallied at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center on Saturday in protest of continued operations at the Greenridge cryptocurrency mining facility.
The rally was held to commemorate the anniversary of the Greenridge Title V Air Permit being denied in 2022. Despite the permit denial, the company continues to operate in Geneva during the appeal process.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) settled with Greenridge Generation LLC in 2024, ordering the company to monitor groundwater contamination and stop using its surface impoundment, which included coal ash. Coal ash is a surface stream that contains the harmful contaminants mercury, arsenic, cobalt, and cadmium at high levels, posing a risk to the environment and water.
