Court paperwork: UR settles lawsuit seeking partial tuition refund for remote learning

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The University of Rochester has settled a class action lawsuit that seeks a partial tuition refund for students who learned remotely during the pandemic, court paperwork shows.

A U.S. District Court judge approved the preliminary settlement agreement and found that the plan to distribute the settlement fund is “fair and equitable”. We’re working to learn more about the plan, including how much money would go to students.

The lawsuit, Carstairs v. University of Rochester, argues that students who learned remotely during the spring, summer, or fall of 2020 are entitled to a partial refund on tuition or fees. A student filed the lawsuit five years ago…
