Rochester doctor shares tips to prevent firework injuries and emergency department visits

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As the Fourth of July approaches, doctors are urging caution with fireworks, recommending leaving them to professionals. Fireworks can be dangerous, with sparklers burning at around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to cause severe burns.

First responders, including doctors and firefighters, typically see an increase in injuries and calls during this time of year. Dr. Keith Grams, Director of Emergency Medicine at Rochester Regional Health, discussed ways to avoid the emergency department this Fourth of July.

“I think probably most of the injuries are lower acuity as far as, like, probably just minor burns and things like that,” said Grams. “But unfortunately every now and then you get that catastrophic injury that just it’s just really kind of very, very sad to see it happen.”…
