Providers work to increase dental care for patients with developmental disabilities

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The dentist’s office isn’t always a fun place to be, especially for the special needs community. Extra stress, transportation and even insurance coverage can stand in the way of those with developmental disabilities getting the care they need.

“For this population it’s very difficult because we’re dealing with a population that are extremely uncooperative, not due to their own fault, but not wanting to come into an office, not wanting in any way to open their mouth, not even take an x-ray or let you look,” said Dr. Wayne Lipschitz, the director of the university dental faculty group at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
