ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Wednesday that her office has filed an amicus brief in support of the City of Rochester’s defense against a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice claiming the city’s sanctuary laws are unconstitutional.
Like the City of Rochester, James argues the city’s sanctuary policies are constitutional “because the Constitution grants states and their localities power over the day-to-day public safety of residents within their jurisdiction.”
The Trump Administration, through the DOJ, is arguing Rochester is interfering with federal law enforcement and, therefore, is running afoul of the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, which says federal law supersedes state and local law…
