‘They wanted the validation’: Child Victim’s Act Survivor speaks about $246M Catholic Diocese of Rochester settlement

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Last week, Child Victim’s Act survivors voted unanimously to accept a $246 million settlement with the Diocese of Rochester. It’s been four years since the state closed the lookback window for New Yorkers to file claims under the act, and still there are so many in the throes of litigation. It’s been a whirlwind of a process for the survivors.

“We were told this would take two to three years, so to have it double, triple, wasn’t expected,” survivor Carol DuPré explained. “My mind was kind of a collective sigh rather than a, ‘Let’s pop the champagne,’ because there’s there isn’t anything happy about what we’re talking about. The money won’t fix us.”

DuPré connected with an attorney right before the act had passed. She says she was molested as a young teenager by Father Stuart Hogan at St. Gregory’s in Marion. Hogan retired in 1965 and died in 1985. She’s been waiting decades for the validation that many other victims crave, as well. There are more than 460 local victims, all with similar stories…
