Axes & Ales owner blames Mayor’s “police state” for its closure

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The East & Alex neighborhood axe-throwing bar on East Avenue, Axes & Ales, announced it is closing. In a Facebook post, the owner places the blame on the Mayor’s Office’s decision to enforce tighter security in the East End to reduce gun violence and improve overall safety for residents.

He said that with the publication of the crimes committed in the area and the very public attempt to prevent them, this has led to people avoiding the area entirely.

In 2024, Mayor Evan announced a plan to address gun violence by restricting the East End area to people 21 and older on Saturday nights. The plan also includes closing roads and increasing police and security presence in the area.

Age restrictions coming this weekend to Rochester’s East & Alexander area

Beau Warren, the sole proprietor of Axes & Ale, said this is when he saw an instant 47 percent decrease in Saturday sales. Mostly due to confusion about the new policy and the widely publicized confirmation of violent crime, specifically in that area.

This came days after the non-fatal shooting of a 21-year-old near the area of Ryan Alley and East Avenue. Axes & Ales sits right on this corner, but it’s entirely unconnected to any crimes that have been committed.
