Reported decrease in gun violence varies across upstate N.Y.

New York state is reporting a decrease in gun violence in the biggest upstate communities.

Communities that are a part of the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative saw a 14% drop in shooting incidents with injury in the first half of this year, the state announced last Thursday. That’s a drop of 48 shootings and a 21% decline in shooting deaths compared to this time last year.

“Gun violence in New York is falling as a direct result of our record investments in public safety and prevention initiatives,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “As we work with our public safety partners to make real progress in the fight against gun crimes, I remain committed to investing in programs that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and keep our communities safe.”…
