Fact Check: Unclaimed money from URMC class-action settlement going to Ronald McDonald House, not back to the hospital

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A federal court judge signed off on a settlement to a class action lawsuit against the University of Rochester Medical Center last week. The lawsuit claimed URMC violated the privacy of its patients but URMC denies any wrongdoing.

If you used URMC’s MyChart patient portal or filled out forms on the health system’s website, you might have money coming your way. About 52,000 people responded to a claim form to collect on the settlement.

But what if some of that money can’t be distributed to the rightful patients? There’s a provision in the settlement that, if approved by the court, says any remaining funds will go to the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester – an organization that provides food, transportation and lodging for families while their children receive critical care…
