City officials announce programs, resources, safety initiatives for back to school

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With the first day of school underway, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans and city officials outlined public safety priorities and after-school resources for students during a press conference Tuesday at the Avenue D R-Center.

Evans was joined by representatives from Pathways to Peace, the Department of Recreation and Human Services, the Rochester Police Department and the Rochester Fire Department. Together, they emphasized both traffic and community safety, as well as programming designed to keep students engaged after the school day ends.

“We have far too many kids hit by cars and almost hit by cars because motorists forget that school is starting,” Evans said. “You’ll see those yellow buses rolling out over the next couple of days and we want to make sure that people stay safe.”

The mayor stressed the importance of drivers stopping for school buses, noting that cameras will be installed on buses in October to catch violators. The program will begin with a 30-day warning period before tickets are issued…
