ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A surge in demand from New York’s new Universal Free Meals Program is creating food vendor supply shortages for schools across the state, including in Pittsford.
The program, signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul in May and launched this September, requires schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of income.
Because every district participating in the National School Lunch Program draws from the same vendor network, suppliers are struggling to keep up with demand. Some menu items may change on short notice, and Pittsford officials are urging parents to check the district’s online menus for updates…
