Camera towers for border security could be coming to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A new surveillance tower could soon be installed in Rochester in an attempt to increase border security.

These towers are known as Remote Video Surveillance Systems, or RVSS. According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the 140-foot-tall towers can detect and track people within a seven-mile radius using infrared technology.

Right now, CBP is evaluating areas along Lake Ontario to install these towers. If approved, this would be the first tower in Rochester. CBP told News 8 that they have been operating towers like these across the nation for over 15 years. The Buffalo sector has 13 towers…
