County seeking to expand high-speed internet in underserved Rochester neighborhoods

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A $4.2 million investment of COVID relief money is expanding affordable high-speed internet in underserved Rochester neighborhoods.

The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, offers free installation. It also offers a Wi-Fi router and service at $30 a month for five years for eligible households in seven city zip codes. Many families still rely on cell phone data to stay connected.

“The internet is the gateway, really, to opportunity. And yet, the U.S. Census data shows that nearly two out of every ten Rochester households still do not have internet service,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said. “And many more families, on top of that two out of ten, rely on their cell phone plan for internet, which really is not good enough to keep up in today’s world.”…
