Forest rangers rescue hikers attempting to bushwhack up Dial Mountain

KEENE — Two hikers ventured out without a map, compass, headlamp or extra clothes to keep warm Saturday, according to state Forest Rangers. By 4 p.m., they were stuck in thick spruce on the south side of Bear Den Mountain.

The 32-year-old from Syracuse and 36-year-old from Irondequoit had attempted to bushwhack — or cut through dense brush — up Dial Mountain, but had no experience doing so, rangers said. They also had not planned the return to their car once they reached the summit. They called 911 around 4:08 p.m., and around 7:40 p.m. a forest ranger bushwhacked to the hikers and provided them food, water and headlamps before leading them back to the trailhead.
