Leaders address status of SNAP benefits in Monroe County amid ongoing government shutdown

Monroe County leaders gathered on Tuesday to address the ongoing government shutdown and the impact it would have on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

County Executive Adam Bello says the county was notified last week that SNAP benefits due to be released on Nov. 1 would be delayed because of the shutdown. According to Bello’s office, more than 104,000 people in Monroe County rely on SNAP to feed their families, with more than 37,000 being under age 18 and 22,000 over the age of 60. Bello’s office says the SNAP program costs around $20 million per month for Monroe County.

Bello is urging SNAP recipients to continue to submit any necessary documentation to the Monroe County Department of Human Services, and apply for benefits if they need them, so that they can receive SNAP when the shutdown is over…
