Rochester food cupboards face surge as SNAP benefits end

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With SNAP benefits discontinuing come November 1, beneficiaries will have to find alternative assistance. Food pantries like St. Andrews Food Cupboard are providing support more than ever, they say, during this time of increased need.

“It’s cruel for these families to have to try to figure out how to make ends meet,” said director Margaret Oberst. ” And the response from really amazing, wonderful, kind people is that they’re helping food cupboards out because it’s a time of need.”

She said over the last two days, they have had lines stretching down the sidewalk, a flood of phone calls, and a surge of online food requests from people anticipating their losses…
