Rochester police say Non-Fatal Shootings Unit has increased closure rate of cases

The Rochester Police Department says it is seeing results from investigations handled by its Non-Fatal Shooting Unit. Officials released new data during a news conference on Thursday.

The department says the unit was created in summer 2023. At the time, the RPD was only making about 20% of arrests in non-fatal shooting cases. Since that time, Chief David Smith said the closure rate on these cases has climbed to about 40% for the city of Rochester.

“We say someone is shot and survived, and oftentimes we tend to move on,” said Smith. “Although these may not be life-ending injuries, they are all certainly life-altering injuries.”…
