A 33-year-old man died after being hit by a car while fleeing police across I-390 in Gates.
It happened around 12:10 p.m. on Nov. 13, near the Lyell Avenue overpass. Gates police were chasing the man on foot after a reported theft at a nearby retail store. During the chase, the suspect ran down an embankment and into the southbound lanes of I-390, where he was struck by a passing vehicle.
State Police say the driver, 69-year-old Ronald M. Bandemer of Rochester, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was taken to Highland Hospital for evaluation and later released.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Collision Reconstruction Unit are leading the investigation. The Monroe County Medical Examiner responded, and the State Attorney General’s Office was notified, as required by protocol…
