Jammin’ for Jamaica: Rochester event brings good vibes and aid for island nation recovering from Category 5 hurricane

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Jamaican Organization Sunday continues hosting a fundraising event, Jammin’ for Jamaica, to help those affected by Hurricane Melissa. News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin attended day two of the weekend-long event Saturday night, speaking with organizers and attendees who emphasized the importance of the cause.

Deseree Lampart, originally from Manchester, Jamaica, has lived in Rochester for nearly 50 years but visits Jamaica annually. “There are folks there that have no roof over their head,” Lampart said. “I’m looking at just my neighbor at Content, Manchester. Some of those houses are under water.”

Lloyd St. Claire shared his concerns about the aftermath of the hurricane. “Lots of people lost their total house,” St. Claire said. “Roads are devastated, the hospital, our schools. Billions of dollars just to rebuild our country.”…
