Demolition nearly complete at former Vacuum Oil Refinery in Rochester, contaminated soil to be removed next

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Demolition continued Monday at the former Vacuum Oil Refinery on Flint Street along the Genesee River in Rochester. Crews were nearly finished tearing down the building, transforming the site significantly in less than two weeks.

The next phase involves crews digging up the contaminated soil and replacing it with clean soil, officials said.

The city of Rochester recently said the soil will be disposed of off-site, but the location remains unspecified. The state Department of Environmental Conservation stated that the removal process is done in stages and more information will be provided as it progresses…
