‘We cannot stay silent’: Rochester protesters voice solidarity with Iranian struggles

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Iranian-Americans gathered in downtown Rochester to protest and raise awareness about the ongoing situation in Iran. The protests in Iran began on Dec. 28 due, in part, to rising food prices and inflation. More than 2,400 protesters have died, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Amir Hassanzadeh, who helped organize the Rochester protest, said, “Red meat has become a luxury in Iran and that’s because of inflation. People are struggling with their basic day-to-day needs.”

Hassanzadeh, who moved to the U.S. from Tehran eight years ago, said he last heard from his family five days ago. An internet shutdown, which began on Jan. 8, has made communication difficult…
