Final prison guard sentenced in Robert Brooks case sentenced, but remains free for now

Utica, N.Y. — A state prison guard who pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment in connection with the death of inmate Robert Brooks received his sentence Friday, but he remained free pending an appeal.

Michael Fisher was one of 10 correctional officers charged in connection with the death of Robert Brooks, 43, of Greece, whose brutal beating immediately after his arrival Dec. 9, 2024 at Marcy Correctional Facility was captured on guards’ body cameras, prompting calls for prison reform.

Prosecutors said Fisher failed to intervene as other guards beat Brooks in a prison infirmary room. Brooks died the next day…
