HENRIETTA, N.Y. — A third water main break in three days occurred at the busy intersection of East Henrietta Road and Calkins Road. Previous breaks happened near Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and at the Mall at Greece Ridge.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic spoke with the water authority about the recent increase in water main breaks. Officials said the deep freeze during winter causes the ground to shift, leading to these breaks.
“We call it frost,” said Michael Sullivan, a distribution manager with the water authority. “The frost will creep into the ground and get deeper and deeper, and that will put an increased force, an increased pressure on the pipes, and things will start to shift around and cause fractures in the mains.”…
