New York State Governor Kathy Hochul recently declared the allocation of an additional $150 million to aid municipalities outside of New York City. This sum bolsters the financial support set for local governments grappling with fiscal burdens. In an effort to triple the provisioned Temporary Municipal Assistance, $100 million has been added to the Executive Budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2027, ensuring cities, towns, and villages receive the necessary backing to maintain essential services.
The substantial infusion of funds means that locales such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers will each see an increase of up to $10 million. Whereas Buffalo stands to gain the most, with a separate package of $30 million aimed at closing the city’s budget shortfall. According to the announcement, the Governor noted, “I understand the unique challenges our local leaders are experiencing, which is why my Administration has worked closely with municipalities across the state to increase financial support from the State,” as per the Governor’s Office.
Funds totaling $20 million have also been earmarked for municipalities in dire straits. To tap into this resource, eligible cities must consent to a thorough review by the Financial Restructuring Board for Local Governments.
