‘We don’t want anyone to go hungry’: Rochester leaders urge SNAP recipients to seek help ahead of changes

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester and Monroe County are alerting local SNAP recipients to keep an eye on their mail and notifications ahead of changes to the food assistance program.

Starting at the beginning of March, adults ages 18-64 without a child under 14 will have to record at least 80 hours per month of work to receive SNAP for more than three months in a three-year period. There are exemptions for people with certain disabilities, people who are pregnant, and caregivers.

According to County Executive Adam Bello, over 100,000 people in Monroe County rely on SNAP to feed their families. Bello estimates over 4,000 of them are at risk of losing their benefits if paperwork is not completed by the March 1 deadline.
