ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Workers rallied outside the post office on Jefferson Road, carrying signs that expressed the need for an all-career workforce. The rally aimed to bring attention to the fight for a fair contract as the letter carriers’ contract for Rochester and surrounding areas is set to expire in May.
The president of the local letter carrier union, Monique Mate, said the rally was held to raise awareness about the ongoing contract negotiations. She said workers are seeking fairness due to retention and pay issues.
“From our previous contract, they just don’t want to pay the higher wages, they don’t want to make an all-career workforce and we believe an all-career workforce would provide better service,” she said. “When you hire an all-career workforce — what happens is the retention lasts and our problem is we’re not retaining people.”…
