‘Officer Down’: Rochester officer Anthony DiPonzio reflects on 2009 shooting in upcoming book

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio, who was shot in the head while responding to a call in 2009, is now sharing his story in a new book, “Officer Down: The Hidden Cost Behind the Oath,” due out later this year. News10NBC spoke with DiPonzio about his journey and the changes he’s observed since the incident.

Reflecting on that fateful day, DiPonzio recalled, “January 31st, 2009 went into work. One of the other officers that I worked with went to go clear a drug corner. I went back to him up and that’s about the last thing that I remember, I was shot in the back of the head.”

After years of rehabilitation, DiPonzio returned to the department in 2011 and began instructing at the police academy. He has been writing about his experiences since 2010, documenting his journey from the hospital to his rehabilitation…
