The cost of running space heaters, rather than using the thermostat during the cold months

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As temperatures drop and winds pick up, many people may consider using space heaters instead of turning up the thermostat. However, with utility bills on the rise, it’s important to know the cost of running these heaters.

A 1,500-watt space heater running for eight hours uses, on average, 20 to 30 times more energy than a refrigerator. George Angevine, National Grid Energy Efficiency Program Manager, explained the financial impact.

“Over the course of a month, that translates to $77 for just one space heater,” said Angevine. “That can increase if there are a number of them plugged into the wall.”…
