Suspect shoots and kills himself after shooting and injuring officer, Rochester police say

Rochester, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department said an officer was shot overnight after stopping to talk to someone on the city’s northwest side.

Chief David Smith said the officer stepped out of a marked patrol car on Lake Avenue near Driving Park around 1 a.m. Friday to talk to a man, who almost immediately produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at him before fleeing the scene.

The officer applied a tourniquet to himself until another officer arrived and took him to Rochester General Hospital. Smith said he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be released from the hospital Friday…
