Rochester police officer shot in the line of duty released from hospital

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A Rochester police officer who was shot and injured in the line of duty early Friday walked out of Rochester General Hospital on Saturday as other members of the Rochester Police Department showed support.

Surveillance video from Friday’s incident shows the officer stepping out of his marked patrol vehicle on Lake Avenue near Driving Park around 1 a.m. Police Chief David Smith said the officer was there to speak with a man, identified as Shatique Cato, about a recent shooting in the city. Police said Cato fired three rounds at the officer, striking him at least once in the lower body, then ran away.

Police said the officer applied his own tourniquet before other officers arrived and brought him to the hospital. Smith said the officer had non-life-threatening injuries. He was released Saturday morning, according to Capt. Greg Bello…
