Flood Watch Issued Across Western and Central New York Through April 1

(WNY News Now) – A Flood Watch has been issued for a large portion of western and central New York, including Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Niagara, and surrounding counties, effective from 8:00 a.m. on March 31 through 8:00 p.m. on April 1, according to NY Alert.

The watch also includes Oneida, Herkimer, Hamilton, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Allegany, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties.

Officials warn that flooding conditions can develop rapidly, with water levels and flow rates capable of changing in a short period of time. Motorists are reminded that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

Drivers are strongly advised not to attempt to cross flooded roadways. Even shallow water can be deceptive, and road surfaces beneath may be washed out or unstable. Authorities emphasize the safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown,” and caution residents to never drive around barricades.

In addition to roadway hazards, floodwaters may conceal serious dangers, including downed electrical wires, sharp debris, fast-moving currents, and contamination from sewage or hazardous chemicals. Contact with floodwater can pose risks of injury, illness, or worse.

Residents are encouraged to stay out of floodwaters and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and potential flooding…
